Brutalist Architecture | Geisel Library UC San Diego | Unisex T-Shirt

Few buildings occupy such a fascinating place between brutalism and futurism as the Geisel Library at the University of California, San Diego. Designed by William Pereira and completed in 1970, the building sits dramatically at the head of a canyon — its raw concrete piers angling and extending outwards, with a changing façade that varies from level to level and side to side. The effect is alien, audacious and utterly unforgettable.

On first glance it resembles a flower opening up or a strange tree on the horizon — but look closer and the design reveals something more meaningful. The entire structure resembles a pair of hands holding a stack of books, literally cementing the building's purpose into its very form. Its tiered concrete tower, cantilevered outward from eight dramatic legs, remains one of the most photographed academic buildings in the world.

Named in honour of Audrey and Theodor Seuss Geisel — better known as Dr. Seuss — following a $20 million gift from their estate, the library is as culturally rich as it is architecturally bold. This striking black and white design with bold red 'Brutalist' typography is available in a raw natural cotton colour only.
