BRUTALIST BERLIN - the Bierpinsel, Steglitz.

Some buildings blend in. The Bierpinsel never even tried. Rising 47 meters above Schloßstraße on the Joachim-Tiburtius Bridge, this polygonal tower has been the landmark of Berlin-Steglitz since it opened in 1976 - a textbook piece of pop architecture designed by Ralf Schüler and Ursulina Schüler-Witte, the same duo behind the ICC.

The architects pictured a tree. Berliners saw a shaving brush. Add the planned restaurant inside and the free beer poured at the opening, and the name "Bierpinsel" - Beer Brush - was settled for good. Listed as a historical monument since 2017, its facade has carried the work of street artists since 2010, a one-year project that never left.

This version comes at the tower from a different angle. Looking straight up from below, the stacked crown seems to tip over your head while the zig-zag stair tower climbs beside it, all in gritty, distressed white ink on solid black. The street graffiti on its concrete ledges is left in as a nod to its street art years, with bold BRUTALIST BERLIN lettering underneath. Part of the .ryte TRACK Brutalist series, drawn and designed in Berlin for anyone who loves concrete, modernism and the strange, wonderful buildings of West Berlin.
